Nestled just off the beaten path on Oahu’s East Side, hidden through a lush jungle is one of the best waterfall hikes that Hawai’i has to offer. Maunawili Falls is a sublime escape from the hustle & bustle of Waikiki & Honolulu.
This hike crosses the stream several times & can get pretty muddy after a rain. The elevation gain is pretty small, but the time it takes to complete this hikes greatly depends on how muddy it is.
This trail offers the chance to find strawberry guava fruits in the tree canopy for strawberry guava fruits for a quick snack
|Best time:||Not right after a storm|

The hike is located in a residential neighborhood off of Kalaniana’ole highway.
Address: 1202, Kelewina St, Kailua, HI 96734
You are parking in a residential neighborhood, so please be respectful.
Read the signs carefully because many of the signs in the neighborhood indicate that there is no parking between the sign and the corner of the street.
Kailua town is a short ~10 minute drive away.
Having done this hike several times in sneakers after storms, we opted to do this hike barefoot thinking that feet are a lot easier to clean than shoes.
Besides, you have several crossing over a creek on the hike which will soak your shoes.
We weren’t disappointed & actually found much of the hike easier being barefoot.
- Water (2L per person should be plenty)
- Swimwear (You’ll want to jump in!)
Cautions & Hazards
